The Compostopia Family Composting Experiment is gradually creating participatory scenes for sustainable living within Shenzhen communities. Starting from existing community farming experiences, the project connects rooftop planting, parent-child participation, food waste transformation, and family observation, inviting residents to rethink the relationship between food, soil, and the environment in everyday life.

Previous Community Practice

CM+ Serviced Apartment Shenzhen Taige Rooftop FarmLocated at No. 1033 Nanhai Road, Shekou, Nanshan District, Shenzhen, 1CM+ Serviced Apartment Shenzhen Taige Rooftop Farm has hosted rooftop farming activities for families and children.
Parent-child families took part in turning soil, sowing seeds, watering, caring for plants, and harvesting, experiencing how food grows from the land within an urban rooftop space.
This case provides an important foundation for the next stage of Compostopia’s family composting experiment.
Once families have built a connection with soil through planting and harvesting, composting can naturally become the next step: bringing food scraps back to the land.

Upcoming Partner Community

Jingshan VillasLocated at No. 1007 Nanhai Avenue, Nanshan District, Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, Jingshan Villas is one of the planned partner communities for the next stage of the project. With its established residential environment and everyday family context, Jingshan Villas will further explore how family composting can become part of residents’ daily lives. In the upcoming collaboration, the project team plans to work with the community on family recruitment, composting kit distribution, operating instructions, observation records, and staged feedback. Through a two-week to one-month experiment, participating families will observe how food scraps gradually decompose and understand how they can be transformed from “waste” into a soil resource.

What We Are Building

From Farming to Composting
Starting from rooftop farming experiences, the project introduces family composting and helps residents understand that food does not end with consumption, but can return to the soil cycle through the transformation of kitchen scraps.
From Activity Experience to Daily Action
Through composting kits, operation guides, and observation records, families can participate over two weeks to one month and visibly observe the transformation process.
From Community Cases to a Shenzhen Network
With Taige Rooftop Farm as an existing case and Jingshan Villas as an upcoming partner community, the project is building its early foundation in Shenzhen. More communities, schools, and families will be invited to join in the future.

Expanding Across Shenzhen

In the next stage, the project will continue to invite more communities, families, schools, and public spaces across Shenzhen to participate. Through lightweight composting kits, clear family operation guides, and a continuous feedback mechanism, we hope to make family composting a simple, participatory, and replicable urban environmental practice.
